Jane Ellen Escalante Vander Kamp, age 68, of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Mountain Home, Texas, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 7, 2019, after an extended battle with cancer.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Mario Alberto Escalante, by her son Andres Escalante, by her daughters Cecilia Schaaf, Rachel Escalante, Marianne Escalante, Elizabeth Escalante, and Stephanie Escalante; by her brother Steve Vander Kamp; and by eleven grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews, and friends.

Born to parents Douglas and Martha Vander Kamp, her childhood and young adult years were spent in Michigan. She was an active member in the debate club, played and taught the piano, and enjoyed books, music, and friends. She was a graduate of Hope College. At age 23, Jane found her vocation as a missionary; together with her husband and children, she went on to devote over forty years to full-time volunteer work in various parts of Mexico.

As a missionary, Jane was passionate, dedicated, tireless, and purposeful; initiating and supporting local and regional efforts in many areas. From organizing a yearly Christmas Day celebration for over 10,000 homeless people in the heart of downtown Mexico City to driving into poverty-stricken rural areas to provide relief to natural disaster victims, and having her monthly donation campaigns to bring the needed items for the children in many different local orphanages. She stopped at nothing when it came to helping her fellow man. Wherever a need arose, Jane wanted to be there. Janes' second nature was not only to actively provide a persons physical needs but was also quick to pray for others & give words of encouragement.

Jane was first diagnosed with cancer in 2011; she fought hard and was in remission for six years. Jane and Alberto relocated at that time from Veracruz, Mexico to Mountain Home, Texas, where she had hoped to create a beautiful, peaceful space where others too could heal in both mind and body. In her Texas home, she was also able to be closer to her loved ones and spend more time with family. Sadly, shortly after relocating, her cancer returned. She continued to fight until her last breath.
Jane's life was built on the firm conviction that she could – and would – make the world a better place one life at a time. Towards the end of her life's journey, she continued to pray for loved ones and friends even when she felt she couldn't do much else.

At the heart of all her efforts, travels, and sacrifices was love. Jane fearlessly lived her life to the fullest, touched many hundreds of lives, and will be missed greatly by her family and friends.

The family requests that all flowers, cards & gifts be sent to 105 Peggy Dr. Mountain Home, TX 78058

Arrangements are under the direction and care of the professionals at Kerrville Funeral Home (830) 895-5111.
