Winnie Davis King Mauk, of Ingram, Texas formerly of Houston, died Thursday, June 2, 2005 in Kerrville at the age of 99. She was born to Stephen and Margaret King in Nacogdoches, Texas on April 5, 1906. She spent her childhood in Beaumont, Texas and upon high school graduation went to SMU. After college graduation in 1927 she married Raymond Mauk. They settled in Houston and lived there for 36 years before retiring to their beloved Hill Country. He predeceased her by 5 years at the age of 97.Winnie Davis was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She was a poet, a member of the Houston Poetry Society and a talented Bible Study leader. A life long Methodist married in the First Methodist Church of Beaumont, a member of St. Pauls Methodist Church in Houston for over 30 years and then a member of the Hunt Methodist Church. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Hunt Garden Club.She is survived by daughters Peggy Barnett and husband, Bill of Houston and Carol Pitts and Husband, Paul of Ingram grandchildren Ann Barnett Stern and husband Karl of Houston, Ned Barnett of Houston, Doug and Denise Pitts of Spring Texas and Davis and Lyndi Pitts of Ft. Worth great grandchildren Carter and Margaret Stern, Lauren and Connor Pitts, Douglas and Caroline Pitts. She was predeceased by sisters, Margaret Dowell Blanch and Katherine Newton.A memorial service will be held 11:00AM, Friday June 10, 2005 at the Hunt United Methodist Church with Reverend Sam Hunnicutt officiating. Private interment will be in Nichols Cemetery.
