Kerrville On March 20, 2012, the Lord extended His glorious hand to Willie A. Compton Pitts and brought her to be with her
beloved husband Henry, in Paradise. She was 102 years young. Willie was born on July 18, 1909 in Crawford, Texas to Nancy and S. T. Compton, as the seventh of eight children.
She had four sisters and three brothers, all of whom predeceased her.
Willie is survived by her daughter, Patricia Ann Peckham of Kerrville and son in law, J. R. Peckham of Kerrville, TX two granddaughters, Joyce Willis of Beaumont, TX and Joe Ann
Vezina of Shreveport, LA. one step granddaughter, Pamela Heiman of Kerrville, TX three grandsons, Clay Castleberry of Houston, TX, Dean Castleberry of Travelers Rest, SC, and Joe Castleberry of Austin, TX two step grandsons, Mike Peckham of Lumberton, TX and Rick Peckham of West Orange, NJ one great granddaughter, Emma and two great grandsons, Wayne and Phillip seven step great grandsons and six step great granddaughters twelve greatgreatgrandchildren, along with a host of many loving friends and neighbors.
Willie was married on August 9, 1931 to Henry Traynham Pitts in DeRidder, LA, and enjoyed a full married life with her beloved husband until his death in 1984. She began work as a young woman in the newspaper business at her fathers paper in Mt. Enterprise, TX and continued off and on in the news field until her retirement from the Orange Leader in 1982. She was feted by the Associated Press for fifty years in the business.
Willie lived in Orange, TX before relocating to Kerrville in 1987. She was active in the Eastern Star, was a charter member and a president of the AARP Chapter in Orange, and was active in the Business and Professional Womens organization. In Kerrville, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Memorial Services will be held on Monday, March 26, 2012 at 11 AM in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church, 321 Thompson Drive, Kerrville, TX, with the Rev. Bob Allen officiating. She will be entered beside her husband, Henry, in Orange, Texas.
