Willard Nielsen

Willard J. Nielsen, 98, of Hunt, Texas, peacefully passed away surrounded by his wife, son, daughter and son-in-law, on June 15, 2021, in Kerrville, Texas.  Willard was born in Chicago, Illinois, on January 6, 1923, to Axel and Elizabeth Nielsen, and moved with his six brothers and sisters to Detroit where he was raised.  His employment at Cone Drive Gears relocated him to Traverse City, Michigan, where he met and married his wife, Maxine Lautner, in 1953.  In 2000, they retired to the Texas Hill country where they have enjoyed the past two decades of their lives.

Willie lived a full life…happiest when working in his garage, traveling, enjoying time with friends and family, or earning his scuba diving certification at the age of seventy!  His very favorite and most special moments were dancing with his wife, Max, to Big Band music.

Willie was the beloved husband of Maxine for 68 years; father of Sue & her husband Greg Talford, John & his daughter Chrissy, Greg, and his Swedish son, Lars Hedstrom.  His immediate family survives him along with numerous nieces and nephews.  His six siblings and their spouses preceded him in death.

Kerrville Funeral Home has made local arrangements with burial planned at a later date in Traverse City, Michigan.  The family would like to thank the staff at Hilltop for the kindness, dedication and professionalism shared with Willie during his short stay.
