BellaireThelma Lee Ferguson Spain, 100, passed away from this life on Sunday March 14, 2010 at a health care facility in Bellaire, TX.
She was born on December 9, 1909, in Mt. Pleasant, Texas, to Ethel Elizabeth and Joseph C. Ferguson. She had a twin sister, Thalia, who preceded her in death on March 14, 1994.
Mrs. Spain is survived by her sister, Margaret Lou Connor, of Mt. Pleasant, Texas, and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Spain became a registered nurse in 1935. She joined the United States Army as a First Lieutenant in May 1938 and served as an army nurse for eight years. While in the service, she met her husband Lt. Col Joseph C. Spain, to whom she was married for fifty years. During World War II, she served in England and Wales, while her husband served in the Normandy invasion. She was honorably discharged from the service at Ft. Sam Houston in January 1946. Her husband continued his military career and then retired after 22 years of service. He preceded her in death on October 26, 1993.
Graveside service and internment will be at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas at 1:30 p.m. on March 17, 2010 with Rev. Sam Ligon officiating. Mrs. Spain was very proud of her military service and requested a full military burial. She was proud to be an American and to have served her nation during wartime.
