Sidney Albert Nicholson, Jr., 82, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2004. He was born on December 28, 1921 in Mason, Texas, the youngest child of Sidney A. and Alice Ritter Nicholson, Sr.After graduating from Mason High School, Sidney joined the Armed Forces serving in the Engineers stateside and in Siapan throughout World War II. While stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, he met Marjorie Ward while she was working for the American Red Cross on the post. They married on December 24, 1944 at Sunset Baptist Church in Mt. Home.Following his military duty in 1946, Sidney worked for a short time at Ranchmans Wool Mohair Warehouse in Ingram and operated a grocery store in Hunt before joining T. J. Moore Lumber Hardware in Ingram. He started in the bookkeeping department however when the opportunity came for Moores to purchase a General Electric appliance franchise, he persuaded the company to establish a furniture and appliance department. This business, under his management, occupied the second floor of the lumber and hardware store until 1975 when it moved to Kerrville at the present location.With 50 years of service at Moores, Sidney retired in 1997. Countless numbers friends and customers throughout the years would brag that he sold them carpet, appliances, or a whole house full of furniture, many items they have to this day.Sidney was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. His favorite pastime at family gatherings was to tell funny stories about the children and grandchildren.He served as the president of the newly organized HuntIngram Lions Club from 19471948. Sidney worked tirelessly on fundraisers for the Lions benefiting the building of the Texas Lions Camp. Two successful events he was proud of were the Womanless Wedding production where he played the baby in a wheelbarrow carriage and a rodeo at Criders in Hunt where was a bull rider.Sidney served as Sunday School Superintendent at Hunt United Methodist Church and was the chairman of the PastorParish Relations committee. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church serving on various committees and head usher for many years. Nicholson also served as the president of the Board of Directors at Hilltop Village overseeing the building of the Terry Chapel.Sidney is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Marj Nicholson two daughters, Darla Nicholson of Austin and Mindy Nicholson Wendele and fianc Raymond P. Holloway of Kerrville two grandchildren, Meredith Wendele and boyfriend, Chance Mazurek of San Antonio and Justin Travis of Mt. Home Merediths father, John T. Wendele of Graham one great granddaughter, Morgan Nicole and a sister, Estelle Cunningham of Devine numerous nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by parents Sidney and Alice Nicholson, Sr., brothers, Les Nicholson, Brooks Nicholson, Clarence Nicholson and sister Velma Sperlich.Services will he held Saturday, July 31, 2004 at 9:00 a.m. for graveside services and interment at Garden of Memories Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Kerrville.Honorary pallbearers will be nephews Morris Dean Nicholson, Rocky Free Nicholson, Marvin Cunningham and Willie Cunningham and Mark Anderson, Gilbert Felfe, Jack Groff, Don Hainlen, Bill Johnston, Jack Moore, Keith Nall and John Wendele.Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or the Hill Country Youth Ranch.
