Comfort, Texas Ruth Burney Posey, 100, of Comfort, Texas passed away on Thursday, October 2, 2003 at Trinity Mission Health Rehab Center in Comfort, Texas. She just recently celebrated her 100th birthday. She was born on June 28th, 1903 at Camp Verde, Texas, but the family moved in to Center Point in 1913 so that the children could attend public schools.She was a member of a pioneer Kerr County family that played an important part in the development of the county. Her grandfather, Hance McCain Burney, was one of the first Kerr County Judges in 1864, 1879, and 1880, and was the first Postmaster in Kerr County from 1858 through 1866. A great uncle, W.D.C. Burney, was Kerr Countys first Sheriff.Mrs. Poseys mother, Ella Cox Burney, came from Alabama in 1877 and the family settled in Center Point, Texas, then later moved to Camp Verde. It was here that Ella Cox met and married William Burney, the father of Ruth Burney Posey. His family originated in Tennessee.Ruth attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Teas and Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas. After graduation she taught in the Kerrville Public Schools for many years, mainly at Tivy Elementary. Some of her former students attended her 100th birthday party.She was a long time member of Center Point United Methodist Church where her father was one of the founders of the church. She was a member of the Wesleyan Circle, and was a charter member of the Center Point Garden Club.Mrs. Posey was preceded in death by her first husband, Aubrey E. Spivey, in 1967, and by her late husband, Lawrence L. Posey, in 2000. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Ella and William Burney, and by two sisters, Betty Burney Mosty Hall and Mabel Burney Ransleben.Survivors include four nieces, Dorothy Mosty Landers of Longview, TX, Eleanor Mosty Seth of Fort Worth, TX., Mary Kathryn Ransleben Ranney of Leland, MS., and Geraldine Ransleben Pianta of San Antonio, TX. stepdaughters, Virginia Lee Schafroth of San Antonio, TX., Olive Dian Buresh of Houston, TX., and Joy Vlasek of Cedar Park, TX. Five greatnephews three great nieces and a host of many loving friends and neighbors. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 6, 2003 at 10 AM at the Center Point United Methodist Church, Center Point, Texas with the Rev. Mack McKinney officiating.Interment will follow at the Center Point Cemetery.Memorials may be made to the Center Point United Methodist Church, 118 Church Street, Center Point, Texas 78010, to VistaCare Hospice, 420 Water Street, Kerrville, Texas 78028, or to a charity of ones choice.Arrangements are under the direction of Kerrville Funeral Home.
