Rose Shannon Daniel Andrews passed away peacefully in her sleep on her 96th birthday, February 19, 2025, in Garland, Texas.
Born on February 19, 1929, to James Walter Daniel and Sophie Shannon Pearson Daniel, Shannon was raised on the Daniel family ranch outside Perryton, Texas. She also talked about living in the "house in town" at times during her childhood. She loved Perryton, and the friends she grew up with there. She attended Abilene Christian College (now Abilene Christian University) and graduated from North Texas State College (now The University of North Texas) in 1950 with a degree in Psychology.
Shannon met Lee Andrews when he was visiting friends in Denton in the late 1940s. He told the story that as he and a friend were driving away from winning a coed softball game, Shannon and one of her friends were in the back seat of the car. He looked over his shoulder to talk to Shannon, who had her baseball cap on backwards, and was struck with the thought, “I’m going to marry her.” And they did marry, in 1950 in Wichita Falls, Texas. They moved a lot in the first years of their marriage, due to Lee’s work in the transportation business, and their four children were each born in a different city. Their oldest child, Mark William Andrews, was born in Houston, Texas. Their second child, Walter Lee Andrews (who goes by Wally) was born in Perryton, Texas. Laura Karen Andrews Whitley, their first daughter, was born in Amarillo, Texas. And their youngest child, Paula Shannon Andrews Rodgers, was born in Roswell, New Mexico. While the kids moved away for college and careers, Shannon and Lee stayed in Roswell until the mid-80s, when they retired to Kerrville, Texas. Only recently did Shannon move back up to North Texas, where Paula and her family now reside.
Shannon grew up with horses and cattle and a strong family heritage. Her father bred quarter horses, specifically cutting horses, and was a founding member of the American Quarter Horse Association. She loved roaming the ranch on horseback. Her mother’s family name of Shannon was very important in Shannon’s life. She continued the tradition of giving Shannon as a middle name to a daughter (Paula), and Paula has passed it on to her daughter, Elizabeth. Shannon spent many years after retirement researching the Shannon family tree, and was proud to be descended from George (Pegleg) Shannon, the youngest member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
Shannon enjoyed playing tennis in Roswell with her dear friends Beverly McCoy, Vida Mitchell, and Marylou Hibbard. She had a wicked backhand, by all accounts. She spent hours sewing who knows how many school clothes and theater costumes for her children. Her hobbies included experimenting with decoupage, candle-making, and hand-crafting many beautiful Christmas decorations. Shannon was also a good cook. Her specialty was Chicken Divan – it was heavenly.
Shannon and Lee were active in the Presbyterian Church both in Roswell and Kerrville. After Lee’s death, she took on a variety of roles in her local church, including kitchen and hospitality duty, celebratory banner design and assembly, financial secretary, and she served as an Elder for many years.
Shannon was preceded in death by her husband, Lee; son, Mark; and grandson, Andrew Whitley.
She is survived by her son, Wally and his wife, Bridgette of Driftwood, Texas; daughter, Karen of San Antonio, Texas; and daughter, Paula Rodgers and her husband, Greg of Rowlett, Texas; granddaughter, Elizabeth Rodgers of Houston, Texas; and her grandson, Ben Rodgers of Frisco, Texas.
A Graveside Service will be held for Shannon on Saturday, March 1st, 2025, at 11:00 am, at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Kerrville, Texas, where she will be buried next to Lee. Raymond Tear will officiate.
Services with integrity, pride, and honor are under the direction of Kerrville Funeral Home. (830) 895-5111
