Kerrville Richard M. Hosler died Saturday, June 4, 2005, at his home. A memorial service in tribute to his indomitable spirit and generous life of service will be held Thursday, June 9 at 1:30 p.m. at the Chapel of Kerrville Funeral Home.Hosler was born June 20,1912 in Hammond, IN, the only child of Frank and Maude Morton Hosler. After elementary and high school in Hammond, Dick worked for two years to save enough money to enroll in college at DePauw University in Greencastle, IN. His academic record and work ethic in just one semester won him an academic scholarship to complete his college education there.After graduating from DePauw with honors, he attended Law School at Indiana University. He passed State Bar Examination in 1937 and was admitted to the practice of law in the State of Indiana. He was successful in his practice and was respected as a jury trial lawyer. In March of 1940 he married Margaret Young in Booneville, IN. His beloved Maggie was the love of his life and stead companion for 54 years. He established the Margaret Hosler Excellence in Teaching Award at Schreiner University in her memory.In 1941, Dick was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the Army and was called to active duty during World War II. After the war, he was offered and accepted a regular commission in the U.S. Army Air Corps later called the U.S. Air Force. He retired from the military in 1967 as a Lt. Colonel. When he and Maggie moved to Kerrville in 1978, they enthusiastically involved themselves in leadership roles throughout the community. Avid golfers, they enjoyed Riverhill Country Club activities and friendships for many years. Active members of First Presbyterian Church of Ingram, the Hoslers quietly became generous benefactors of many area nonprofit organizations. Especially did they enjoy assisting the Hill Country Youth Ranch and Schreiner University. The Hoslers were members of the Schreiner Oaks Society and encouraged the faculty, staff and administration with their enthusiastic presence and generous gifts. A member of the Masonic fraternity, Dick also had a keen interest in The Masonic Home and School in Fort Worth, TX. As his health failed in recent years, Dick often expressed deep appreciation for the caregivers who assisted him with professionalism and deep commitment. Generous even beyond death, Dick bequeathed his body to the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.Memorials may be made to The Masonic Home and School in Ft. Gifts to Schreiner may be designated to the Margaret and Richard Hosler Endowed Scholarship and can be mailed to University Advancement, 2100 Memorial Blvd, Kerrville, TX 78028.Arrangements are under the direction and personal care of Kerrville Funeral Home.
