Peter Reinholt

Peter Herbert Reinholt, passed away in the Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veterans Home in Floresville, Texas, from complications of Alzheimers and Parkinsons disease, December 19, 2006 at the age of 79 years 11 months and 20 days. He was born in Comfort, Texas December 30, 1926 to Peter Allen Reinholt, from Alsace Lorraine, France, and Corda Below of Comfort, Texas. Pete lived in Comfort with his mother until he was about 15. In 1942, they both moved to Houston to be near his married sister. Wanting to follow in the footsteps of his 2 brothers during WW11, with his mothers signature of consent, Pete attempted to enlist in the US Navy in 1943. The recruiter called the school to verify his age the recruiter was informed Pete was only 16. The recruiter told Pete to come back when he turned 17, which he did December 30th of that year. Having served his time and WWII being over, Pete chose to be discharged in 1946. He worked for Houston Linen while earning his high school diploma. Deciding he liked military life better than civilian life, he enlisted once again into the Navy in 1948 and was stationed in Kodiak, Alaska. From Alaska, he was transferred to Corpus Christi, Texas. While stationed at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, he met and married his wife of almost 57 years, Mae Minnette Stubbs, January 15, 1950 at St. Benedicts Catholic Church, in San Benito, Texas. In 1952, he was part of a group transferred from NAS Corpus Christi to reopen NAS Hutchinson, Kansas. In 1955, he was stationed at Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island in Washington State with Squadron VP17, flying missions out of Japan over Korea during the Korean incident. In 1960, Pete was stationed in Lakehurst, New Jersey, attached to Lighter Than Air Blimps Early Radar Warning. He helped ready the Airships for mothballs in 1961. The Airships were too costly in lives and financially the Texas Towers were doing essentially the same job. He served over 20 years, retired March 1966 as a Senior Chief, and attached to Targets while stationed in San Diego, California during the Vietnam War.Being in aviation his entire military career, Pete was one of the many sailors that never sailed. When he retired from the Navy, with his wife and children, he settled in Kerrville and opened a television sales and service shop.
