Kerrville Norma Johnson Epperson, a native of Saint Louis, Missouri, was born on February 19, 1918, and died on February 8, 2010, at the age of ninetyone.
After graduating from Central High School in St. Louis in 1935, attending nursing school at City Hospital Nursing School in St. Louis, and working as a registered nurse for a number of years at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Norma met and married Woodrow Epperson in the early part of World War II. Woodrow Epperson served in the United States Army in India in World War II, while Norma continued her employment with Barnes Hospital.
Upon his return from the service, Woodrow Epperson, Sr., Norma, and Woodrow Epperson, Jr. moved to Texas and eventually settled in Kerrville in 1954. Throughout her Kerrville residency, Norma worked tirelessly as a registered nurse with the Veterans Administration Hospital and retired in 1978.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Woodrow Epperson, Sr. her mother, Virginia Bridgeforth Johnson her father, John Johnson and two of her three brothers, Max Johnson and Lowen Bradley Johnson.
Norma is survived by her brother John Stewart Johnson, of West Plains, Missouri her son, Woodrow Epperson, Jr. daughterinlaw, Carol Hanchey Epperson, of Houston, Texas her granddaughter, Carla Denise Epperson her grandsoninlaw, Philip Williams Cottingham, both of Austin, Texas her two grandsons, Charles Douglas Epperson and James Woodrow Epperson her two granddaughtersinlaw, Jessica Werner Epperson and Erin Cooper Epperson, all of Dallas, Texas and her three greatgrandchildren, Lilith Eleanor Cottingham Matilda Elspeth Cottingham, of Austin and Kathryn Elizabeth Epperson, of Dallas her devoted friend and caregiver, Irene Trevino, Jr., of Kerrville and several nieces and nephews.
Norma was a loving wife and friend, a devoted mother, grandmother, and greatgrandmother, who enjoyed nothing more in her later years than spending time with her family and friends. She was an avid gardener and a voracious reader whose straightforward and pragmatic perspective brought a sense of balance to all who had the privilege of being around her. Norma also was a companion whose sparkle and enthusiasm brought a special joy to all those in her wide circle of friends and relatives. She will be missed.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at the Guadalupe Cemetery in Kerrville, Texas.
