Nell Porter

Nell Sarah Callegari Porter, 91, passed peacefully from this life in the wee morning hours of June 2, 2013.

Born September 20, 1921 on the banks of Bayou Rouge in Cottonport, Louisiana the youngest of seven children to Jerome Preston Callegari and Cornelia Jane Roth Callegari. She graduated Cottonport High School in 1938 and went on to The Alexandria Academy of Beauty Culture graduating in 1940. She owned and operated Nells Beauty Parlor located in her childhood home in Cottonport. She married Richard Nello Porter shortly after Pearl Harbor on December 21, 1941 in Cottonport. She and Nello lived in many different places in Louisiana and Texas as his job with Gulf Oil Corporation moved them frequently. During this time she packed up her family and moved 57 times.

In 1961 she and Nello bought the Western Motel in Munday, Texas and operated it for just over 20 years. They retired and moved to Kerrville, Texas in 1984. She was a devoted wife and mother, a skillful homemaker and seamstress. She was of Catholic faith and attended Notre Dame in Kerrville.

She was preceded in death by her parents siblings, Roth Callegari, Jerome Callegari, Alice Callegari Turnbull, Alwena Sister Callegari Lemoine, Alma Callegari Lemoine, Ruth Booba Callegari Poret and infant grandson, David Seth Porter.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Nello Porter of Kerrville, Texas son, Richard Nello Porter, Jr. of Stockdale, Texas daughters, Teggy Catherine Darden and husband Jerry of Lubbock, Texas, and Tammy Nell Porter of Kerrville, Texas grandson, Richard Nello Porter, III and wife Kim of Gainesville, Texas and a host of nieces and nephews in Louisiana. Her family will miss her dearly.

Memorials may be made to Peterson Hospice or to the Alzheimers Association.

Graveside services will be 2:00 PM, Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at Garden of Memories Cemetery, 3250 Fredericksburg Rd. in Kerrville with Deacon Sonny Kaufhold officiating. Open visitation will be Monday, June 3, 2013 at Kerrville Funeral Home.
