Merritt W. Spencer, 92, passed from this life at a local hospital on June 10, 2013. Merritt was born on January 16, 1921 in Hornell, NY to Ivan Q. and Annie Minnie Back Spencer. He was the fifth of their eight children.

Merritt spent the first nineteen years of his life moving around western New York State. In 1924 his parents, Ivan and Minnie started Elim Bible School and Missionary Fellowship. As the school grew they had to find better facilities and the family moved several times. Merritt grew up at the bible school and working on the bible school farm.

In 1942 Merritt went into the Army. It was during this time he first came to Texas and to San Antonio, he decided that he liked it very much. While in the service he spent time in San Antonio and then was sent to Europe.

After the War he went back to New York, this time to Lima. In 1951 he married Cleone Janes from Carlsbad, NM. She was a student from Elim Bible School. They made Lima home for the next 45 years. Merritt worked on road construction and was the superintendent of public works for the village of Lima for many years. He retired from New York state department of transportation.

In 1986 Merritt and Cleone moved from New York to Ingram, TX. He would tell people that he wasnt a native Texan but got here is as as he could He will be missed by all those who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters and 2 brothers.

Those left to honor and cherish his memory are his wife, Cleone Spencer of Ingram, TX son, Mike Spencer of Lake Wales, FL daughters, Anne Brady of Kerrville, TX, and Sue Ryttersgaard and husband David of Surrey, BC Canada sisters, Bernice Bush of Carlsbad, CA and Faith Cartland of Northridge, CA. He is also survived by four grandchildren and one great grandchild.


Memorial services will be at Western Hills Baptist Church, 2010 Goat Creek Rd., Kerrville, TX 78028, on Friday June 14, 2013 at 3PM.
