KERRVILLE Melvin Mel Samuel Klick died at a local nursing facility on Wednesday, July 24, 2013. Klick, 91 years of age, was born Jan. 16, 1922, in Fulton, Mo. The family lived on a farm outside Fulton.
Klick joined the U.S. Army during World War II and trained with the combat engineers. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He moved to Mexico, Mo., after the service and opened a machine shop. Because of his wifes poor health, the couple moved to the valley of Texas in the 1960s. Klick later moved to Austin, where he taught shop at the high school level.
From 1971 to 1974, he served as a U.S. Sky Marshal on domestic and international flights. He was a U.S. Customs Patrol Officer for 11 years beginning in 1974.After this government service, he once again opened a machine shop in the Valley.
He and Gaynelle McGowan Byrd were married on Oct. 6, 1989, and they moved to Kerrville in June of 1994.
Mel Klick is survived by his wife, Gaynelle stepson, Lance Johnson and his wife, Marianela and their three sons, Eric, John Luke and Richard. He also is survived by his fatherinlaw, Ervin Bud Mednansky.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 28, 2013, at First Christian Church, 1900 Goat Creek Road, with the Rev. Bill Blackburn officiating.
