Maxine Lillian Nielsen, 89, of Hunt, Texas, peacefully passed away on January 1, 2024, in Kerrville, Texas. Maxine was born in Solon Township (Michigan) on August 3, 1934, to Alvin and Arlene Lautner. Along with her three brothers, Maxine attended a one-room country schoolhouse before transferring to high school in Traverse City, Michigan. She married Willard J. Nielsen in 1953, and spent the next 47 years living in Traverse City raising their family, volunteering, and working for the Traverse City Public Schools at both the junior high and senior high school libraries. In 2000, Willie and Max retired to the Texas Hill country where they have enjoyed the past two decades.
Maxine enjoyed life...happiest when sewing or knitting, traveling, volunteering & supporting special causes, and enjoying time with friends & family! She was the first one ready to go for ice cream, successfully met her goal of visiting all 50 states, and personally knit over 1,000 baby hats for newborns at local hospitals. Whenever there was a big band playing, she and Willie were “on the dance floor”...and were usually the last ones to leave! Maxine’s smile and generosity brightened every room she entered.
Maxine was predeceased by her beloved husband of 68 years, Willard Nielsen. She is survived by her children: daughter Sue & her husband Greg Talford, son John & his daughter Chrissy, son Greg, and Swedish son Lars Hedstrom; her brother, Harold Lautner; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Kerrville Funeral Home has made local arrangements. A graveside service celebrating the lives of Maxine & Willard Nielsen will be held in Traverse City, Michigan, at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Hill Country Youth Ranch (www.youth-ranch.org) where both Max & Willie volunteered for many years during their retirement in Texas.
Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Kerrville Funeral Home. (830)895-5111
