Mary Coulter

Mary Ann Coulter, born in Hebron, Nebraska on June 12, 1930, passed away May 3, 2014 in Kerrville, TX. Marys parents were Joe E. and Besse Bowen.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Jim and their two daughters, Christine Coulter and her husband Clay Grider of Spring, TX, and Julie Coulter and her husband Paul Lorenz of Ballwin, MO brother, Don Bowen of Dayton, OH, and brother, Dean Bowen and wife Marion of Kerrville, TX. Mary had four grandchildren and one greatgranddaughter. She is predeceased by her son, James B. Coulter and sister, June Crain.

Marys father moved the family to Pharr, TX in 1931 and planted a citrus orchard. Mary grew up on that farm. Mary graduated from PSAJ High School in 1947. She graduated from Texas A I University on August 25, 1950 and married Jim on August 27, 1950. She was very proud that she graduated in three years with a degree in Elementary Education. Mary taught school in Brownsville, TX and El Cajon, CA and later in Oklahoma City, OK.

Marys many friends in Oklahoma City, Houston and Kerrville knew her for her tenacity playing bridge and golf. She tried, until she was no longer able to play bridge and associate with others. Mary came from a musically talented family. They all loved to sing. Mary sang in choirs in college and in church in Oklahoma City. Next to her love of bridge was her love of travel. Mary and Jim traveled extensively to places not on the usual travel agency tours Malta, Bahrain, Scotlands Orkney Islands, Jordan, Yemen and similar obscure places. Many major cities in the world were visited and enjoyed as well. One trip resulted in going around the world. Mary liked to meet new people and did so with ease.

The family is most appreciative of the very professional and kind care provided by Peterson Hospice. Their care and concern provided by the nurses Shelly, at first and at the last, Lisa and the additional care from the hospice staff made Marys last days more comfortable and kept the family fully informed of the progress of her disease. The family also acknowledges the care and concern of Dr. James Young and his staff and the staff at River Point.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 PM, Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church in Kerrville with Rev. Bob Allen officiating.

Any memorials in her behalf should be made to the charity of choice. The Coulter family supports the Veterans of Foreign Wars, research for a cure of Alzheimer disease and Foundation For Life: 10900 Northwest Fwy. Suite 112, Houston, TX 77092.
