Mary Hay Chmelik, 88, of Kerrville, Texas passed from this life on September 19, 2014 at a local care facility. Mary was born September 12, 1926 to Sam Ross Hay, Jr. and Gessner Lane Hay in Houston, Texas.
Mary graduated from Lamar High School in Houston and from Rice University in 1947. On December 4, 1947, she married Theodore Francis Chmelik and they moved all over Texas following Teds career. Mary taught elementary school in Corpus Christi. Mary and Ted moved to Hunt in 1983, and joined the Hunt United Methodist Church and the Hunt Volunteer Fire Department. After Teds death in 1989, Mary became more involved in the community, volunteering at the Hill Country Youth Ranch Auxiliary and Thrift Shop. She also enjoyed being a member of the Hunt Garden Club and the SewnSews. She travelled the world extensively for the next fifteen years.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents husband sister, Martha Hay Keith and brotherinlaw, George M. Keith.
Those left to honor and cherish her memory include her daughters, Frances Chmelik and Nancy Bruce Butler granddaughters, Lee Butler and Kelly Erin Peavler and great granddaughter, Margo Elizabeth Peavler.
Memorial services will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at the Hunt United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Cave and Rev. Sam Hunnicutt officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Hunt United Methodist Church or to the Disabled Veterans DAV.
