CENTER POINT Mrs. Mary Virginia Edds Armistead of Center Point passed away Thursday, January 9, 2014, at her home with husband Joe and their three children, Lynn, David and Tom and wife Dawn, all present. This followed a long illness of cancer treatment.
Since 1993, Mary is remembered for playing the piano at the Center Point Christian Church, and as the Church Treasurer for fifteen years. She is a 1995 graduate of Leadership Kerr County and an avid supporter of the Salvation Army.
Mary was born October 6, 1938 in Hebbronville, TX. Her mother and father moved to Corpus Christi in 1943. She attended school at Fisher Elementary, Wynn Seale Junior High School, and W.B. Ray High School. She and Joe met their senior year of High School in Texas History class, and the rest is history. Earlier, each had both promised their parents that they would not marry until they finished college. They both graduated from Del Mar Junior College in Corpus Christi, after which, Mary went to Texas Womens University, Denton, TX, achieving a teaching degree. Joe went to Lamar University, Beaumont, TX, achieving a degree in Commercial Art.
After graduation Mary taught school for a year at Kalk Elementary fourth grade in Corpus Christi, winning top honors scholastically and in sports. Her Principal was dismayed when Joe asked for her hand. They married June 3, 1963 in the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, and then headed to Fort Sill, OK for OCS Field Artillery School.
What followed was a twenty eight year career in the military, seventy five percent of which Mary was the President of Military Wives Clubs, several school programs, a docent at several historical sites, and fostered several disadvantaged wives programs, all of which she never forgot.
After retirement, they moved back to Corpus Christi for a year and a half, and then to Center Point in 1993 where Mary had found property several years earlier, while Joe was in Vietnam. They waited a few years to build their home to be sure they were making the right decision. Mary gave her stamp of , designed their home and watched it being built every day in 1996, by Stacy Blackledge and brothers.
Mary has loved these past twenty years in her home, in her church family, and with her three children, eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
May she rest in peace.
