Marie King

Kerrville Marie LeClear King, 89, of Kerrville, passed from this life at a local health care facility on December 31, 2010, following a long battle with Alzheimers disease

She was born on January 15, 1921 in Syracuse, NY, the daughter of Walter and Rena LaClear.

Marie was raised in Oak Park, Illinois and graduated from Oak Park and River Forest Township High School in 1938. She then pursued both Art English at the University of Illinois, University of Wisconsin, Northwestern University and the American Academy of Art.

She met her future husband, John Wilford Jack King, in 1944 at the First Baptist Church of Oak Park, where they were married on May 7, 1948. The couple continued to live in Oak Park until 1955, at which time they moved to Highland Park, Illinois where Marie became particularly involved with the North Shore African Violet Society and the Highland Park Womens Club.

Marie worked as an Executive Secretary to the Vice President of Two Way radio at The Motorola Corporation until 1956.

Marie and Jack had 2 children, Gregg b. 1957 and Holly b. 1960, before moving to Lake Bluff, Illinois in 1967. Following the move, Marie became involved with the North Shore Embroiderers Guild, the Lake Bluff Garden Club and the Lake Bluff Womens Club.

All through her life, she pursued her passion for art in multiple forms: gardening, metalsmithing, needlework, painting, folk art and gourmet cooking. Her strong talents were admired by friends and family alike. Marie and Jack retired to Terra Linda Ranch in the Texas Hill Country in 1981, where she continued to bring her exceptional talents as a charter member of the Tierra Linda Garden Club and the Tierra Linda Extension Homemakers. The couple used their retirement years to enjoy extensive travel throughout the United States, which also enabled Marie to pursue her great love of the Hopi and Zuni cultures.

She is survived by her husband, Jack and two children, Gregg and Holly.
