Maria Gonzales

SAN ANTONIO - Mary "Tonita" Gonzales, 52, of San Antonio, Texas passed from this life at a San Antonio hospital on Sunday, August 9, 2015 after a long battle with cancer. Mary was the daughter of Salvador and Consuelo Avila Venegas.

Born in McAllen, Texas on October 25, 1962, she married the love of her life, Gene E. Gonzales on September 29, 1990. Mary, or for many "Tonita," was a very talented individual. She started working as a high school student at The Rose Shop in Kerrville, later moving to San Antonio with her husband. She worked with the Spring Garden Flower Shop as well as HEB floral department, where she further advanced her knowledge of the business. Mary was a very creative individual having always enjoyed working with flowers and creating the right floral piece for the occasion.

Mary began competing in 2003 in the Alamo Professional Florist Association "Alamo Cup." She placed 2nd and was recognized as "rookie of the year" and "People's Choice." In the 2004 "Alamo Cup," Mary placed 1st, earning that coveted place to advance to the "Texas Cup" in Austin, Texas, which recognized her as a leading florist in Texas. She enjoyed spending time with her family and loved the outdoors.

She is preceded in death by her father, Salvador Venegas.

Those let to honor and cherish her memory are her husband, Gene E. Gonzales, sons, Phillip and Eric Gonzales; mother, Consuelo Avila Venegas; brothers, Jose Venegas and Rolando Venegas and his wife Bertha; sister, Dolores Bestwina and husband Dale; many nieces, nephews, and a host of loving friends who will miss Mary dearly.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary offered by Deacon Daniel Arriaga will be held at 10 AM, Wednesday, August 12, 2015 in the Main Chapel of Kerrville Funeral Home, 1221 Junction Highway, Kerrville, Texas 78028. Following the rosary, also in the Main Chapel, a Celebration of Life will be held starting at 11 AM with Pastor Noah Diggs officiating.
