Kerrville Lt. Col. USAF Ret., F.E. Frank Umphress, Jr., age 91, of Kerrville, Texas passed from this life on Wednesday morning, October 22, 2008 at a local care facility.Frank was born on January 25, 1917 and grew up in Van Zandt County, Texas. nbspHe graduated from high school in Canton, Texas in 1935 and enrolled in East Texas State Teachers College in Commerce, Texas. nbspHe graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in 19 and began a career of public school teaching.nbspHe met the love of his life, Hallie Margaret Miller, and married on Christmas Eve of 1946 in Washington, DC.nbspThey made a life together in many places, raising to their credit, two wonderful children.nbspWith the onset of World War II, he enlisted as an aviation cadet in the Army Air Corps and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant before going to Europe where he was assigned flying duties with the 8th Air Force. nbspJust a few honors earned during his career included the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross with one Oak Leaf Cluster.nbspAfter the war, Frank held various Air Force Staff positions stateside, in Europe, and the Far East. nbspHis duties necessitated travels to various destinations including Alaska, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Philippines, Australia, and practically all of Europe. nbspHe retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1967 and has since taught Junior Air Force ROTC, and has also served as a substitute mail carrier with the United States Postal Service.nbspnbspSome may remember Frank for his volunteer contributions spanning over several years in preparing tax returns for the elderly.nbspOthers will have vivid memories of his portrayals of Adam and Moses preformed for various church and civic groups.nbspFrank will be remembered as a person who always tried to do his toward his family and his fellow man. He will be missed by all who knew him.nbspHe is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and two brothers.nbspSurvivors include his wife Margaret of 61 years of Kerrville, TX one son, Dr. David Umphress and wife Kimberley and their four children of Opelika, Alabama daughter, Kate Allen and her husband Gene and their four children of Kerrville, Texas daughter Beth McEachern and her husband Gilbert and their three children of North Richland Hills, Texas, along with a host of many loving friends, church family, and neighbors.nbspMemorial Services will be held 1 PM, Saturday, October 25, 2008 in the Chapel of Kerrville Funeral Home with Rev.
