Lois May Unega Nokwsi Lynch McHargue was born on October 21st, 1923, in Chelsea, Oklahoma, forty miles from Cherokee Tribal Headquarters in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Her loving parents Albert Elihu Lynch and Marie Edna Whitehill Lynch, along with her grandparents, and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins, welcomed her into this world. She passed from this earthly realm on March 15th, 2023 at 99 years of age, and was welcomed to heaven by those loved ones and so many other family and friends who have joined them there over her many years.
A lover of art, writing, history, and gardening in the rich soils of mother earth, she held Jesus Christ dearly in her heart as her Lord and personal savior. She was a kind and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, and will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to have known her.
She moved with her parents to Midland, TX., in 1936, and graduated from Midland High School in 1940. She graduated from Christian College in Columbia, MO, with an Associate Degree, and from the University of Texas in 1944, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Her graduate work was in social sciences at Texas Tech University, and the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, in Odessa, TX.
While living for forty-five years in Midland, Lois owned the Midlander Magazine and participated in the Tejas Garden Club, Midland Iris Society, Midland Arts Association, PEO, Altusa, and the Midland Boy and Girl Scouts. She was responsible for beginning several children’s art programs in the Midland private schools.
She moved with her parents and daughter’s family to Ingram in 1981, where she began to love the hill country and appreciate the wonderful people who live here. She enjoyed participating in the Kerrville Trailblazers walking club, Kerrville Historical Society, and Point Theatre. She taught art at Heart of the Hills camp for a summer, and especially loved the ten years she spent as a Master Tutor for the learning Support Services of Schreiner University, where she tutored the subjects of Government, History, and Art History, well into her 80s. She was known affectionately as “Ms. Mac” by her many students and friends there.
She was a member of the Cherokee Historical Society of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and enjoyed her Cherokee heritage and the history of her people. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Kerrville.
Lois was preceeded in death by her beloved son James Albert (Jimmy) McHargue and daughter Laura Marie Lightner. She was survived by James (Jim) Paul McHargue, her son Dan Simpson, his wife Debbie, her three grandsons Tim and his wife Becca Huchton, Paul and his wife Iris Huchton, and Will Huchton. She was blessed with and survived by 4 great grandchildren including Parker Anne Huchton, Timothy Matthew Huchton, Everly Hope Huchton, and Finnley Hart Huchton, whom she loved dearly, and niece Jan and her husband Jim, nephew Rick and his wife Lorna Evans, niece Gloria Ann Graham, and so many other beloved family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers, Lois and her family would appreciate memorials to go to Peterson Hospice in Kerrville and Presbyterian Mo Ranch Assembly. We would also like to thank her doctors and the many great caretakers she had over the years.
