Kerrville Lois Oakley Chambers, a native of Fruitland, Tenn., passed away on Friday, August 27, 2010, at River Hills Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Aug. 7, 1925, and was 85 at her death, following a protracted illness.
She was predeceased by her parents, Will and Mattie Oakley of Fruitland, Tenn. sisters, Zane Ragsdale of Trenton, Tenn., and Blanche Exum of Jackson, Tenn.
She is survived by her husband, Boardman R. Chambers of Kerrville her daughters, Marie Chambers of Culver City, Calif., and Miriam Clarkson and husband, Edward, of Kerrville her son, Jonathan Chambers and wife, Tina, of San Antonio her sister, Dr. Bess Hicks of Nashville, Tenn. her granddaughters, Celeste Young of Kerrville and Brooke Chambers of San Antonio her greatgrandsons, Preston and Trey Chambers of Kerrville and
numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.
A Kerrville resident for 53 years, she was a lifelong Presbyterian. She also was an active member of First Presbyterian Church for many years, serving as a deacon and an elder, and twice serving as moderator for the Women of the Church and serving a number of times as Bible moderator of the Womens Circle.
She earned a B.A. and an M.A. in mathematics from the Peabody College of Education of Vanderbilt University. She began a 25year teaching career at Dupont High School in Old Hickory, Tenn. This was followed by a brief stint at Semmes High School in Semmes, Ala., and then a long tenure at Tivy High School, where she served as chair of the mathematics department. She was fortunate in that her love for mathematics made her teaching both a vocation and an avocation.
She was a truly multidimensional person with a number of hobbies. She particularly enjoyed golf, bridge, photography and using her geometry to build fences, playpens, treehouses, tool sheds, chairs, benches and tables.
ation will be held at the Kerrville Funeral Home from 6 8 PM, Monday, August 30, 2010. Private Interment will be held at the Garden of Memories Cemetery at 11 AM, Tuesday, August 31, 2010 with a Celebration of her Life following in the Main Sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church of Kerrville at 2 PM.
Memorial Donations for Lois Chambers may be made to the Hill Country College Fund or the Building Fund of the First Presbyterian Church, Kerrville, TX.
