Leo and Gwen Dunnigan passed away Thursday, March 25 as a result of an automobile accident that occurred south of Austin. They were returning from a square dancing event, one of their favorite activities. Leo was born 32422 in Olga, ND to Ann and Earl Dunnigan. He was the eldest of seven children. He served his country as an aviator in WWII in both the U. S. Navy and the U. S. Marine Corps, primarily in the South Pacific. Subsequently, he continued service in the U. S. Border Patrol and retired after 32 years of government service. He was instrumental in the formation and was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Retired Border Patrol Officers, served on the board of the Greenwood Forest Homeowners Association, was active in local elections, and was a weekly volunteer at Hospice in Kerr County.Gwen was born 122022 in Lodema, ND to Martha and Eric Lawonn. She was one of five children. Gwen served her country in WWII as a secretary in the local recruiting office. She and Leo married in 1947 after having met at a dance. She had an active life as the mother of 9 children and volunteered with various PTAs, supported numerous charities, and worked side by side with Leo in local elections and with Hospice. When you saw one, you saw the other.Leo and Gwen are survived by their 9 children, Pat Greer of Plano, TX, Donn Dunnigan of Brownsville, TX, Bill Dunnigan of Garland, TX, Kathy Hubble of Corpus Christi, TX, Jim Dunnigan of Spring, TX, Judy Foster of Enid, OK, Tom Dunnigan of Columbia, SC, Steve Dunnigan of Belton, TX and Cindy Lindgren of California, MD. Leos surviving siblings are his brothers Pat, Lorn, and Raymond Dunnigan and sister Lois Jackson. Gwens surviving siblings are her brother Eric Lawonn and sister Dorothy Dietrich. They are also survived by 24 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.Funeral arrangements include interment at 12:30 p.m. at Garden of Memories Cemetery on Hwy. 16 in Kerrville, TX, with a memorial service to follow at 2:00 pm at Notre Dame Catholic Church, 909 Main Street, Kerrville, TX. The family will receive friends at a reception at the church following the service. Open visitation will be Monday evening at Kerrville Funeral Home.
