She passed from this life Thursday, June 25, 2015 in Lubbock while surrounded by her loving family and friends.

LaVena was born November 20, 1955 in Hobbs, New Mexico, but got to Texas as fast as she could.

She served our Lord through her work at the Children's Home of Lubbock and Lubbock Christian University for the majority of her adult life. She also attended LCU, receiving both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees.

LaVena's grandchildren were her pride and joy. She loved spending every minute she could with them. She was an accomplished gardener and cook. She will also be remembered for her seamstress abilities through her work with the LCU Music and Drama departments, the Levelland High School Choir, and for many of her family members and friends.

As a member of the Cactus Drive Church of Christ, she was a long-time leader in the children's ministry.

LaVena was preceded in death by her father Garrett Crowell; her mother and stepfather Bobbie and Gary Puckett; her first husband Robert Rains; her sister in law Rhonda Rains Dunn; and sister Elaine Evans.

Those left to honor and cherish her memory are: husband, Kyle Skelton of Levelland and his children; daughter, Anne Flores, her husband John, and their children Marcie and Sebastian of Carlsbad; son, David Rains of Levelland; brother in law, Stephen Rains of Hobbs; niece, Jeanie Dunn and family of Hobbs; brother in law, Bruce Evans of Lubbock; parents in law, Ralph and Jodie Skelton of Kress; sister in law, Carey Smith and family of Spring; sister in law, Becky Mize and family of Plainview and sister in law, Amber Young and family of Shallowater.

Memorials may be made to the Children's Home of Lubbock, PO Box 2824, Lubbock, Texas 79408.
