Kerrville Larry W. Prather, 94, of Kerrville, passed from this life at a local Kerrville health care center on Tuesday evening, March 6, 2012.
Born in Flaherty, KY on November 9, 1917, he was the son of Will T. and Ida Elizabeth Coffman Prather. He had been a resident of Kerrville since 1970.
Mr. Prather served in the US Army during World War II and in January of 1946, was honorably discharged as a Sgt.
It was while he was serving in the Army where he met his wife, Margaret Zimmerman, while they were both stationed at an Army hospital in India. As his story goes, he would bribe the guards at the gate at Margarets barracks, to see his future bride. Following their discharge from the Army, they were married on April 21, 1946 at the home of Margarets mother in Valley Falls, KS.
Mr. Prather worked as a Chief Medical Administrator at VA Hospitals and after 27 years, retired in 1973.
He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Kerrville.
Mr. Prather was a member of Square Dancing Clubs in Michigan and Texas.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Z. Prather, who passed on January 6, 2012, his parents, and two brothers, Russell Prather and Dewey Prather.
Those left to honor and cherish his memory are his children, Barbara Prather of Grand Rapids, MI, Janet Simmons and husband, Pat, of Saginaw, MI, Gregory Prather and wife, Terri, of Austin, TX and Michael Prather and wife, Hattie, of Buda, TX grandchildren, Matthew Michelle Simmons, Jason Simmons, Christy Brian Murphy, Cody Sylvia Jackson, Julie Jackson and Alexandra Prather great grandchildren, Austin, Carter, Emily, Sammy, Aubrey, Logan, Christopher, Kayla, Dominick and Halia his brother, Hayes Prather of Ekron, KY and nieces and nephews.
ation will be held on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 from 10AM4PM at Kerrville Funeral Home.
A celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at 4PM in the Main Chapel of Kerrville Funeral Home. Interment will be held at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, TX on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at 10:30AM.
The family suggests that donations in his name be made to the Zion Lutheran Church, 600 Barnett, Kerrville, TX 78028.
