John Oscar Lackey, 86, of Kerrville went to be with the Lord on September 25, 2002 at his get away near Terlingua, Texas. He was born in Medina, Texas to Oscar O. and Eva Estella Lackey on March 14, 1916.Growing up and attending school in Cross Plains, Texas he was very active in whatever he decided to do. Mr. Lackey served time in the Civilian Conservation Corps before entering the U.S. Navy during WWII. He served on a Pacific Destroyer, and was discharged in Hawaii.Mr. Lackey married Leota Ann Jackson in Los Angeles, California in 19. He owned and operated a local automotive repair shop there until he moved. In 1946, Mr. Lackey opened and operated Johns Garage in Kerrville where he serviced many automobiles for the Kerrville Community until his retirement. He sold the business to his son, Bill Lackey who carries on the family tradition of automotive repair.Mr. Lackey was very active in the Kerrville Senior Games where he had collected many awards and metals through the years. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, bridge and domino player, and spent countless hours at Dietert Senior Center entertaining those who would gather to hear his stories. He was a member of the local VFW, and a member of the National Rifle Association.Mr. Lackey is preceded in death by his parents, Oscar O. Lackey, and Eva Estelle Gray Lackey and a son, John Freddie Frederick Lackey.He is survived by brothers, Glen Lackey of Kerrville, and Saul Lackey of Arkansas sisters, Gertrude Van Riper of Johnson City, Texas, and Ruth Peavler of San Antonio, Texas sons, William Bill Lackey and wife Katy of Kerrville, and Edward Kieth Lackey and wife Theresa of Bethel, Alaska daughters, Beverly Jean Stisser of Kerrville, and Peggy Murphy of Oregon one daughterinlaw, Debbie Lackey from Oklahoma 13 grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren. Many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors also survive him.Services for Mr. Lackey will be held at the Kerrville Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, September 30, 2002 at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow at West Prong Cemetery in Medina, Texas.
