Jo Ann Hubbeling

INGRAM Quiet and humble through life and death, our loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Jo Ann Hubbeling, passed away at her home near Ingram, TX, on January 7, 2014. She battled more than two months to recover after openheart surgery, but when complications sealed her fate she spent her final days peacefully at home, surrounded by the love and support of family and friends.

Jo Ann was born to the late A.C. and Grace Humphrey in Abilene, Texas, on March 29, 1932. Her kind heart, melodic voice, and ironic sense of humor, endeared her to many, even though she was an unassuming person whose life was marked by visual impairment that made her legally blind and never able to drive. She graduated near the top of her class from Stamford High School in 1949 and earned her bachelors degree from Baylor University in 1953. She married John Hubbeling on September 6, 1953, and together they bore and raised six children.

The couple lived in Greenville, Mississippi where John was stationed in the Air Force and Jo Ann taught first grade. Soon after, they began their family, residing in Canyon and Gruver, Texas. In 1962, they moved to Iowa to help with Johns family farm in Ayrshire, but they landed more permanently in Pomeroy, Iowa, where John took a teaching position. During that time they were members of First Baptist Church in Ayrshire and Bethel Baptist Church in Newell, Iowa. Jo Ann stayed busy at home, mostly cooking for her family, the beneficiaries of her signature comfort foods, like roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy, and homemade oatmeal cookies, fresh out of the oven after school. More than 20 years later, in 1985, they relocated to Boerne, Texas. Having devoted her life to her family and faith, Jo Ann had a natural affinity for caring for babies. After her children were grown, she continued to touch many lives by providing inhome childcare and also volunteering at her church in the nursery. In 1994, the couple retired to their current home near Ingram, Texas, so that they could spend more time with their children and grandchildren.

God came first in Jo Anns life, and most recently she was an active member of the Hunt Baptist Church, where among other things she helped in the nursery and volunteered for charities such as Samaritans Purse. Jo Ann and John also enjoyed attending Stamfords annual class reunions, as well as organizing and attending family gatherings, and visiting with her sister Sue. Jo Anns other favorite pastimes included reading, listening to music, crossword puzzles, growing flowers and eating chocolate, the last habit of which was successfully passed on to most of her offspring.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, John Hubbeling of Ingram and the couples six children, listed in birth order: Steve Hubbeling wife Debbie of Austin, TX Mike Hubbeling wife Teri of Austin, TX Susan Essing husband Mitch of Pomeroy, IA Sally Mirabella husband Mike of The Woodlands, TX Daniel Hubbeling wife Kim of San Antonio, TX and Linda Wattonville husband Jason of Huxley, IA. Her fifteen grandchildren include: Nicole Dewey, Drew and Aaron Hubbeling Harper and Tess Hubbeling Rachael Hubbeling and Derek and Abby Essing Amanda and Michael Mirabella Madison and Olivia Lange and Riley, Saylor and Sophie Wattonville. Her greatgrandchildren are: Jayne Dewey, Alison Hubbeling, and Hayden Essing. She is also survived by her younger brother, George Humphrey wife Joyce of Abilene, TX, and numerous dearly loved cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, A.C. and Grace Terry Humphrey, her brother Wayne Humphrey and her sister Sue Wylie husband Robert.

In a world where selfpromotion has grown common, we will greatly miss Jo Anns epitome of modesty and selflessness. In her honor, we join for a closedcasket Funeral Service, to be held at Hunt Baptist Church on January 25, 2014 at 11 AM, officiated by her Pastor, John Collis, for whom Jo Ann held much affection. Interment will follow at Hunt Japonica Cemetery. The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, support and care for Jo Ann and our family.
