James Sawyer, age 93 passed away Sunday, June 14, 2015 at a local care center in Kerrville, Texas.
Mr. Sawyer was born September 22, 1921 in Monticello, Arkansas the son of John and Bessie Sawyer. James, Jim, Tom, Doc or Dad as he was called over his life was about 3 months short of his 94th birthday. His wife, Betty Pauline Burroughs Sawyer of Portland, OR had been married to him for 69 years prior to her death on July 15, 2012. He enjoyed relatively good health until February of this year when he became ill. Mr. Sawyer passed away peacefully and quietly in his bed at Hill Top Village.
Mr. Sawyer was one of an every diminishing number of WWII veterans. He served in Africa and Italy and returned to the US after VE day and was then reassigned to the Pacific theater, but was not sent overseas because of the impending VJ day. He served honorably and was honorably discharged as a result. He spent his life working as a mechanic and raising a family and was respected by everyone in both of his endeavors.
The family would like to thank Peterson Hospice and Hill Top Village Nursing Staff for the outstanding care they provided.
Those left to honor and cherish his memory are two sons: Thomas J. Sawyer and wife, Janette of Harpers Ferry, WV, Dean A Sawyer and wife, Beth of Kerrville, sisters: Mrs. Ruth Haley of McGehee, AR and Mrs. Bennie McCloy of El Dorado, AR, 5 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Bruce and Faye "Arkie" Sawyer. One last honest thing about James is that everyone that came in contact with him has said how much they will miss him. He was that kind of man.
At the request of James Sawyer, no services will be scheduled.
