Lt. Col. USAF Ret., James Roger Hartmann, age 65, of Kerrville, Texas passed away on Thursday, November 20, 2008 at a local hospital.nbspJames was born on July 2, 1943, the son of Robert and Velma La Plant Hartmann in Oak Park, Ill. nbspHe was a 1961 graduate of Washburn High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and continued his education at Dartmouth College graduating with his Bachelor of Arts in 1965. He enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he began basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX on October 21, 1966. nbspUpon completion of basic training, James immediately embarked upon officer training, squadron training, and Air Command and Staff College. While in the service, James pursued his study and obtained his Masters of Arts degree in Business Management at the University of Northern Colorado. He retired from the U.S. Air Force at the rank of Lt. Colonel on July 31, 1987 at Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany.nbspJames distinguished himself in the U.S. Air Force by his heroism, even in danger he showed exemplary leadership, and devotion to duty. A few honors earned during his career included the Bronze Star Medal with V device and one oak leaf cluster Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster Air Force Commendation Medal the Vietnam Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with device and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. His personal endeavor and professional manner reflected a great credit upon himself and the U.S. Air Force.nbspHe is preceded in death by his parents.nbspHe is survived by his loving wife, Marie Hartmann two sons, Curtis Hartmann of Hill City, SD and John Hartmann of Basalt, CO stepson, Pierre Minjauw of Fredericksburg brother, Robert Hartmann and wife Sarah of Kerrville niece, Katherine Vanek and children and his first wife, mother of their children, Mary Hartmann of Tokyo, Japan. He will also be missed by his neighbors and numerous friends.nbspGraveside Services will be held privately at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors offered by the U. S. Air Force.nbspIt is suggested that memorial contributions be made to The Salvation Army or the charity of onersquos choice.nbsp
