Jack was born on May 2, 1953 in Monahans, Texas to Vicenta Banuelos Bernard and Guadalupe "Wally" Holguin Bernard, third of four brothers born within five years with whom he shared an extraordinary bond. He grew up in Monahans, surrounded by a large, close extended family. He worked as a respiratory therapist, then a petroleum chemist before following his dream to become a physician. In 1993 he graduated from Albany Medical College in New York. During medical school he met Deanna Czarnecky Bernard, and they married July 21, 1990 in Dallas. Jack completed his residency in Internal Medicine at St. Paul Medical Center in Dallas. Together, they have two wonderful children: Kathleen, 19, who is attending the University of Arizona studying biochemistry and molecular and cellular biology, and Jackson, who graduated from Heritage School on May 22, who also plans to attend the University of Arizona in the fall studying marketing, entrepreneurship, and sports management.
Jack practiced internal medicine for seven years at East Texas Medical Center in Athens, TX, where he became the director of the ICU, before moving to Corinth ,Texas and becoming a hospitalist physician. He practiced at Baylor Grapevine, Denton Regional Medical Center and the Medical Center of Lewisville. In 2008, he moved to Kerrville and headed up the hospitalist program at Peterson Regional Hospital, then practiced at Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center in Eagle Pass, Texas.
Jack was known to everyone as an incredibly kind and caring man, husband, father, friend, and physician. He exhibited extraordinary compassion to his patients and their families. A big man with a big heart, he had a joke for every situation. He will be deeply missed by his friends and family. The family is honoring his wishes to be an organ donor in hopes of extending and enhancing the lives of many more people.
He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Wally and Vicenta Bernard.
He is survived by his wife Deanna; his daughter, Kathleen; his son, Jackson; his brother George Bernard and his wife Esther, of Rowlett; his brother Wally Bernard and his wife Deborah, of Angleton; and his brother Ruben Bernard and his wife Teresa, of Fort Worth; his nieces Catherine Dyer and Debbie Head; nephews Bryan Bernard, George Bernard, and Thomas Thane Bernard; as well as eleven great-nieces and nephews.
