KERRVILLE Fred C. Arto, a long time resident of Kerrville, died at his home on Friday, November 2, 2012. Fred was born March 16, 1919 in Houston.

After graduating from Jan Jacinto High School, he attended the University of Texas. He married Martha Walker in 1941 in Houston, TX. Shortly after, the young couple became residents of New Orleans, LA. Fred enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and was assigned to a branch of Naval Intelligence where he served until the wars end.

After the war, Fred attended night classes at Tulane and Loyola Universities, earning degrees in Business Administration and Law. He was then admitted to the Louisiana Bar Association. He was employed by Standard Oil Company of California, and its successor, Chevron Corporation for 43 years, working as an accountant and later holding the positions of Tax Manager and Tax Counsel. He was a member of the American Petroleum Institutes Executive Committee on Federal Taxation and lectured at tax institutes and forums.

The final assignment with Chevron was in London, England where Fred provided tax counsel for the operations in the United Kingdom and North Sea. Retirement came in 1981. It was farewell to London and hello to the Texas Hill Country where Fred had fond memories from childhood visits at local summer camps. Kerrville was the selected site.

During his retirement, Fred engaged in a number of volunteer and civic activities including 18 years with AARPs Tax Counseling for the Elderly and TaxAid Programs. He served on the Boards of the
ButtHoldsworth Library and The of the Library. He was a long time member of the Kerrville Kiwanis Club and attended the hip Bible Church of Kerrville.

Fred was predeceased by his wife Martha in 1998. He is survived by his daughter, Karen Arto Argence and her husband Wayne Argence of Kerrville, TX grandchildren Russell Argence of Slidell, LA and Jenny Argence of Lake Charles, LA and a host of many loving friends and neighbors.

Memorial Services will be held at 2 PM, Tuesday, November 6, 2012 in the Main Chapel of Kerrville Funeral Home, 1221 Junction Highway, Kerrville, TX with Rev. Mark Rylander, of hip Bible Church, officiating.

The family asks that in lieu of floral tributes, memorials may be forwarded to the charity of ones choice.
