Kerrville NEWTON, Frances Elizabeth White, of Kerrville Texas, died, on January 15th after a brief illness.
She was born in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, firstborn of Charles Francis White and Mary Ethel Felton on May 20, 1923. She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School and went on to earn her Registered Nurse Diploma from Philadelphia General Hospital. In 1944 she joined the United States Army Nurse Corps and served in several stateside assignments during her years of service New Mexico, Oklahoma and Florida among them. It was in Florida she met her beloved husband, Cleon Hampton Newton, and they were married in Coral Gables in 1947. She and Cleon lived in Illinois, China, Japan, Germany, Texas, Georgia, Washington DC, Alaska, and Colorado during the course of Cleons many Army assignments and after retirement.
Through the years, and while raising children, she used her nursing skills working in a number of clinics part time. She also managed to find time to volunteer with of the Library and in schools helping children learn to read. Frances always made everyone feel welcome, special, and valued whether it was her family members, a longtime friend, or a clerk at the dry cleaners. Raising five children in so many different locations made her a grand planner. She took great pains to make sure that her farflung grandchildren knew how very much she loved them, no matter what. She was always up for an adventure, whether it was traveling, a creative movie or an unusual restaurant. She even embodied a pioneering spirit when it came to using the internet... She was a master of emailing, a legendary letterwriter, an avid bird watcher, a champion Scrabble player, a devoted bridge player, an insatiable reader, and she used her very dry wit to keep everyone entertained. Besides Cleon, her dear husband of 66 years, she leaves five children Jeannette Ruark Ken of Kerrville, TX, Joseph Newton Suzanne of Greer, SC, Jacqueline Kemberling Mark, of Aurora CO, Jennifer Newton of Englewood, CO, and Jeffrey Newton of Colorado Springs, CO, as well as six grandchildren, Jonathan and Jeanna Long Jacob and Jillian Carlock Jeremy, Julia, and Janet Newton, and five great grandchildren.
