Fountain Zintz

Kerrville Mr. Fountain Raymond Zintz, of Hunt, TX, passed away on November 23, 2011 at the age of 90, at a local Kerrville hospital.

Raymond was born on November 13, 1921 in Dodgeville, Wisconsin to Lillian Primrose Thorsrud and Fountain Samuel Zintz. Ray grew up in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin where his father began the Dane County News and Farmers Cooperative, but ultimately moved to Madison, Wisconsin then Evanston, Illinois.

From October 1942 until January 1946 he served with the 96th Infantry Division Mechanized Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop in the successful Leyte and Okinawa campaigns.

After graduating from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1950 with a degree in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations, he spent his 30year government service career with the US Atomic Energy Commission Headquarters in Maryland, ultimately the Department of Energy, where he retired as Chief of Emergency Coordination. He was responsible for the first Federal Interagency plan dealing with domestic radiation emergencies, represented the USAEC on the Defense nuclear war readiness planning committee, was the USAEC representative in several International Atomic Energy Agency emergency response planning committees, and was the USAEC chairman of the working group that developed the internationally recognized American Standard Radiation Symbol approved in 1960 and still in use today. He is the author of several training programs and a book on radiation emergencies.

Ray and Doris moved to Hunt, Texas in 1983, settling in Canyon Springs, where he became active in the NARFE Hill Country Chapter 349 serving as President, Vice President, Treasurer, Public Relations Officer, Membership Chairman and Newsletter Editor.

While Ray had impressive professional accomplishments, there was much more to him as a husband, father and grandfather. He especially enjoyed sharing the beautiful Hill Country with his grandson Gregory and highly valued the friendships developed here. Rays constant and careful guiding hand, his warm smile and devotion to his family will be greatly missed, but his memory will be treasured always and held close in our hearts.

Ray is survived by his wife of 61 years Doris Jane, his son Eric Jon, and his brother Charles R. Gustafson.

There will be a memorial service at The Kerrville Funeral Home at 10 AM, Tuesday November 29, 2011.

The family suggests that donation in Rays name be made to the American Legion Hill Country Post 64, 325 Live Oak, Ingram, TX, 78025.
