Kerrville Ermer Grace Cude Hess was born June 2, 1919 to Lillian M. and Marion T. Cude of Caldwell County, Texas. Both families were early Pioneers who came to Texas before Texas became a Republic. Graces formative years were spent on farms around Lockhart, Texas before the family moved to Austin where she graduated from high school. In 1938 she married Earl J. Lee Summerrow. Their children, Earlayne and Mike, were born before Earl joined the US Navy after Pearl Harbor. Earl was killed in action in November, 1944 in the Admiralty Islands. In May 1947, Grace married Lt. Alford B. Rudy Hess of Meeker, Colorado, in Austin, Texas. Shortly after the Korean War, the family began their lifelong migrations around the world as part of Rudys military career. The little farmgirl from Taylorsville, Texas saw the European capitals and most of the United States during her thirty years as an Air Force wife. Many of their years were yet to come, however, when they retired in Denver, Colorado in 1963. After Rudys final military and civilian government jobs , Grace and Rudy sold their Denver home and spent several years traveling in their motorhome. They spent several years working at a NPS resort between Yellowstone and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. In 1985, they were part of the evacuation during the Great Yellowstone Fires. They spent many years happily roaming the mountains that they dearly loved. As Grace often said, No one has had more fun than I have. Hers was, indeed, a full and contented life.Grace and Rudy came to Kerrville in 1999 to join their daughter, Earlayne. These final years have also been full of joy with their children and grandchildren, friends from Flagg Ranch, and their church family. Grace was preceded in death by her brother, Amel, and sister, Myrl. She is survived by husband, Rudy Hess of Kerrville her daughter, Earlayne Chance of Kerrville and son, Mike Hess of Australia.
