Kerrville Elizabeth Laws Carmichael, age 96, died peacefully at her home in Kerrville on July 16, 2006. She was born September 22, 1909, in Dividing Creek, New Jersey, to Norman Lore and Alice DuBois Perry Laws. She graduated from Bridgeton High School and completed a threeyear course at Trenton State Normal School, a prerequisite to her being admitted to a federal training program in physical therapy at Walter Reed Army Hospital. Upon completion of her training she was transferred to Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, Colorado.She came to Texas in 1934 to continue her career as a physical therapist at Brooke General Army Hospital, Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio. While there she met and married Capt. Amos Eugene Carmichael, U.S. Army, retired, on January 28, 1936. Upon his death in 1948 she resumed her career at the Eloise Jaffett School for Crippled Children. She returned to federal service in 1951 when she moved to Kerrville, Texas, and became the head of the Department of Physical Therapy at the Veterans Administration Hospital, where she worked until her retirement in 1969. Upon her retirement she dedicated herself to church and community service and was honored by the City of Kerrville with the Community Service Award.She lived for five years in Austin, but six years ago returned to Kerrville and rejoined the congregation of Trinity Baptist Church, where she had unselfishly and faithfully served for 55 years. Always energetic and capable, she enjoyed helping others less fortunate than herself, visiting nursing homes, providing transportation for the elderly, volunteering at the Dietert Claim and various outreach programs for shutins. She was loved by many and touched the lives of several generations with her acts of kindness and generosity. She will also be remembered for her modesty, preferring to go unrecognized, with her reward being the satisfaction she got from helping others.She is survived by her daughters, Alice Carmichael Royalty and husband, Max, of Lake Jackson, Texas Ruth Carmichael KingLeves and husband Charley, of Gorgona, Panama by her son, Leland Neal Carmichael and wife Dale, of Kerrville, Texas by granddaughter Amy Royalty Jordan of Louisville, Kentucky and by grandson Stuart Andrew Royalty and wife Darcy, of Venice, California and by greatgranddaughter Lisa Nicole Jordan of Atlanta, Georgia. She is also survived by four stepgrandchildren, Kenneth Black, Kim Black Odom, Kirk Black, and Mia Landrum, and eleven stepgreatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents her husband, Col. Amos Eugene Carmichael and by her brothers, Edward and Harold Laws, and her sister, Thelma Laws Speth.Services will be held Friday, July 21, 2006, 10:00 AM at Trinity Baptist Church in Kerrville, Texas. Internment will be at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas on Monday, July 24, 2006, 10:00 AM. In lieu of floral arrangements, the family suggests memorial donations be made in her honor to Trinity Baptist Church, Kerrville, Texas, The Baptist Childrens Home, or to the charity of ones choice. Arrangements are under the direction and personal care of Kerrville Funeral Home.
