Edna Dee Hefty Platte, age 87, passed away on Saturday, July 23, in Kerrville, Texas. Edna was born on May 5, 1936; to loving parents, Peter E. Hefty and Edna Helland Hefty in Monroe, Wisconsin. They lived in New Glaus, Wisconsin until Edna Dee was 12 years old. In 1948, Edna Dee and her parents moved to St. Petersburg, Florida. After graduating from high school, Edna attended the University of Florida where she graduated with a BA in History and continued with advanced studies in library science.

 

In 1959, Edna married her husband Howard J. Platte. They moved to Port Arthur, Texas with their infant daughter Elizabeth. While in Port Arthur, Edna was blessed with 2 additional children: Frederick and Caroline. Edna provided a nurturing environment for her children, actively participated at St. George’s Episcopal Church, and completed a Master of Library Science degree.

 

The family moved to Houston, Texas in 1972. Edna enjoyed success in her career as a librarian, eventually overseeing acquisitions for Fort Bend County’s George Memorial Library, Richmond, Texas which opened in 1986.

 

During the late-90’s, Edna and Howard focused on finding the perfect place to retire. They chose Kerrville and moved from Houston in 2001 so they could spend their retirement years enjoying the beauty of the Texas Hill Country. Edna & Howard enjoyed traveling both international and across the United States. They were active in the Kerrville Trailblazers Walking Club, the Native Plant Society, the Riverside Nature Center, and Texas Master Gardeners. Edna was also involved in St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, AAUW, League of Women Voters, Texas Democratic Women, Kerr Konnect, and various book clubs. Edna touched the lives of many people and is remembered for her smile, her encouraging words, her energy, and her love for her family. Her many Kerrville friends miss her interesting conversation, her hospitality, and her delicious cooking.

 

Edna was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband, Howard J. Platte.

 

Edna is survived by her three children, Elizabeth Platte Reyes (Beth), Fredrick Charles Platte, and Caroline Platte Hill; and 6 grandchildren, Spencer, Parker, Mason, Connor, Isabella, & Manuel.

 

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, August 25, 2023, at 2pm at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church located at 320 St. Peters St. Kerrville, Texas 78028. (near Main Street & Tivy Street)

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Riverside Nature Center, 150 Francisco Lemos St. S, Kerrville, TX 78028.
