KERRVILLE Donnie Loretta Couch passed away Thursday, April 18, 2013, in Conroe, Texas.
The daughter of Don and Billie Couch, she was born near Harlingen, Texas, on Sept. 23, 19, and moved to Kerrville soon after. She was raised on the banks of Town Creek, where her parents built a home for her and her brother. Her father provided for the family with his bicycle repair shop. In 1957, she graduated from Tivy High School.
She went on to become an Army wife during the Vietnam era and have four children. After years spent moving from one military base to the next, she and her four kids moved back to Kerrville. She would have one more child and raise all five as a single mother, while working and continuing her education. She received her degree in medical records from Incarnate Word College in San Antonio, Texas.
Through the years, she worked as a private medical records consultant and as a medical records administrator for Hospice of Kerrville. She went on to have a career in the Veterans Administration of Kerrville as the medical records administrator, where she worked for more than 15 years and retired in the spring of 2006. She made many wonderful friends at the hospital over the years, but she adored her immediate team of coworkers. The feeling must have been mutual as they fondly and aptly nicknamed her Donnie Cash, for her persistent habit of dressing all in black.
She loved art, theater, ballet and classical music. She also had a love of nature, gardening, sailing, traveling and was an avid bird watcher. Her favorite pastime was sitting on the porch in the early morning hours, drinking a cup of very hot coffee, reading the Bible and watching her birds.
In her life, she touch so many. She was a wonderful woman, friend and mother to all.
She is survived by her three daughters, Laura Qualls of Florida, Camille Tucker of Austin and Jaime Flick of Kerrville two sons, Steven Ohlenburger and wife, Donna of Conroe and Eric Ohlenburger and wife, Leanne of Austin her brother, Bob Couch of Kerrville 10 grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.
