Capt. David Smith Pitts USAF Ret., 70, passed from this life at his residence in Comfort, TX on February 10, 2013. He was born on March 28, 1942 to George Frank and Mary Smith Pitts and was raised in Fredericksburg, VA.
As a young man, David enlisted in the United States Air Force, a part of his life that he was very proud of. He was stationed at Cam Ranh Bay Air Force Base from 1971 to 1972 during the Vietnam conflict. After returning to the United States, he continued his education at Omaha University and received his BGS degree. David received his commission as an Officer in 1974 and served a total of 24 years in the Air Force, spanning from August 10, 1961 August 10, 1985.
During his time in Omaha, NE, he met the love of his life, Sharon Sherri Edson, and they were married on May 19, 1973. David was a member of the Masonic Fraternity for 43 years. For the last several years, he was a member of the Fredericksburg Lodge 794, A.F. A. M., as well as the Kerrville Lodge 697, A.F. A. M. He has also been a member of the Scottish Rite since 1969.
David was preceded in death by his mother, father and his sister, Evelyn Payne.
Those left to honor and cherish his memory are his wife, Sherri Pitts of Comfort, TX son, David L. Pitts and wife Kolla of Colorado Springs, CO step children, Bill Newcomer and wife Yvonne of Salem, OR, Jim Newcomer of Omaha, NE, Barry King and partner Julie OBear of Lincoln, NE and Rhonda Rae of Monticello, KY 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren brother, Franklin Pitts and wife Shirly of Springfield, VA brotherinlaw, Ed Payne of Tappahannock, VA, along with a host of many loving friends and neighbors who will miss him dearly.
Memorial Services will be held at 11 AM Monday, February 18, 2013 at the Comfort Baptist Church, Comfort, TX. He will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
