Kerrville David J. Davis, 85, of Kerrville, passed from this life at a local health care facility on Sunday, July 18, 2010.
Born in Maiden, NC on June 27, 1925, he was the son of Forrest and Mary Ruth Moore Davis.
A child in the Depression Era, he worked in cotton and tobacco fields to help his family with six children. While in high school, he was a star running back when Hickory High School won the state championship and he received a scholarship to Duke University, which had to be put on hold because of the war.
He joined the US Navy serving as a gunners mate on the destroyer U.S.S. Maddox. He participated in Dday and while escorting ships in the Mediterranean Sea, his ship was torpedoed and sunk. He spent 5 days on a life raft, was rescued by a British freighter and taken to a hospital in Gibraltar.
Mr. Davis was flown to New York for RR and while there, met the love of his life, Vivian Brand. They were married November 24, 1945 in Pleasant Valley, NY.
He established the Turtle Creek V.F.D and was the fire chief. He was very proud of this accomplishment and all of his firefighters, both men and women.
He loved to fish, hunt and visit casinos, but his greatest joy was playing his guitar and singing. He would hold parties at his home where everyone would bring an instrument and enjoy his famous barbq.
Well always think of him when we hear Folsom Prison Blues.
He loved his family and was proud of his children and grandchildrens accomplishments.
Mr. Davis was predeceased by his parents, his sisters, May and Nellie and his brother, Robert.
Those left to honor and cherish his memory are his wife, Vivian Brand Davis of Kerrville his daughter, Pamela Smith and husband, Colin, of Kerrville his son, Steven Davis and wife, Wanda, of Ingram his grandchildren, David Campbell, Tracy Owen, Jason Davis, Justin Davis and Stephanie Davis and his six great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be no visitation.
There will be a celebration of his life at Kerrville Funeral Home, on Saturday , July 24, 2010 at 10:00AM. Committal service will be private.
The family suggest that donations in his name be made to the American Heart Association, Fallen Hero Fund.com and Turtle Creek V.F.D.
