Kerrville COL. Charles W. Burns, 71, of Kerrville, TX passed away from this life on Tuesday, March 2, 2004 at his residence. Charles was born in Stevens Point, WI on September 23, 1932 to Caroll Eugene and Esther Leona Podoll BehrensBurns.He graduated from Tomah High School, Tomah, WI in 1950. In 1954 he graduated from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI, with a Bachelors Degree in Hispanic Studies. He then traveled to Cuba for a year of advanced studies at the University of Havana as a result of being awarded a scholarship by the Institute of International Studies, New York, NY. Charles returned to the United States in 1956 to begin his military service in the United States Army. After completing Ranger Training at Fort Benning, GA, he returned to Cuba to marry Addie Montalvo Espinosa, and from this marriage were born two daughters, Ana and Vivian, and two sons, Robert and George. His key military assignments in the United States included ROTC Instructor, Creighton University, Omaha, NE Inspector General and G3, Training Center, Fort Benning, GA Commander, District Recruiting Command, Lansing, MI Director of Resource Management, Fort Meade, MO Member, Army Discharge Review Board, Office of Secretary of the Army, Pentagon Director, Training and Systems Support Test Directorate, Test Activity, Fort Hood, TX. His key military assignments overseas were as a Tank Company Commander in Germany US Special Operations in Laos and Armor Advisor, Royal Thai Army, Thailand Exchange Student, Military Institute of Superior Studies, Uruguay Instructor, US Army School of the Americas, Panama A Senior Army Advisor to Vietnamese Army, Vietnam Army Attach to Venezuela and Defense Attach to Trinidad Tobago, US Embassy, Venezuela. Charles retired in 1985 at Fort Hood, TX at the rank of Colonel, after 30 years of distinguished military service.From 19861993, he was employed by Central Texas College of Killeen, TX, as a Financial Analyst. In 1975, he married Carolyn I. Hudnut of Lansing, MI, who has remained faithfully at his side since. Charles and his wife moved to Kerrville, TX in 2002. Charles met death as he lived his life, with courage, dignity, and honor.Charles was predeceased by his parents, his brother Eugene, and StepDaughter Robin Rae Peacock. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Burns of Kerrville, TX daughters Ana Naranjo of Virginia Beach, VA and Vivian Terry McCarthy of Nashville, TN sons Robert Becky Burns of Sunrise, FL and George Evelyn Burns of Miami, FL adopted son, Jason Burns of Lansing, MI StepDaughters Renee Rule of Lansing, MI and Roxanne Rothery of Salado, TX Brother RobertCarol Burns of Madison, WI 13 Grandchildren, and 3 GreatGrandchildren.Funeral services will be held at 10 AM, Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at the Kerrville Funeral Home Chapel, Kerrville, TX with the Rev. Sam Radoman officiating. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery, Kerrville, TX with Military Honors. ation will be held Monday, March 8, 2004 at the Funeral Home.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Disabled American Veterans, Washington, DC, or the local hospice of your choice.Arrangements are under the direction and personal care of Kerrville Funeral Home.
