Charlsie McLaughlin Cawthon, age 93, of Hunt, TX. died peacefully in her sleep early Saturday morning, January 28, 2017, at her residence in Hunt, TX.
She was born December 24, 1923 in Ardmore, Oklahoma , the daughter and only child of Dr. Hugh Charles (H.C.) and Bessie Luce McLaughlin.
Charlsie graduated from Sayre High School in 1940 and went on to attend the University of Oklahoma (OU) where she worked as a photographer for the college newspaper, and graduated with a degree in Education. After college, Charlsie worked for the Oklahoma state welfare agency in the capacity of a Social Worker.
While attending OU, Charlsie met the love of her life, Pete Cawthon Jr, and they later married January 23, 1947. Married for 68 years, Charlsie and Pete raised their 3 children (Peter III, Mark and David) in Houston, TX. Choosing to be a stay at home mom, Charlsie was the heart of the Cawthon family and was active in school functions, cub scouts, and raised Boston Terriers. Years later, in their retirement years, Charlsie and Pete moved to the Hill Country where they resided for the past 35 years.
Charlsie may have been small in stature (5' , 2'', eyes are blue!), but in terms of her faith, she was a mighty woman of God. Since becoming a Christian in the early 70s, Charlsie's life has had an immeasurable impact on countless individuals throughout the Hill Country. She mentored many young ladies through her woman's home group named ''God's Gals'' and the Christian Women's Job Corps of Kerr County. She offered a listening ear, Titus 2 women's counseling, and prayer for those going through hard times. She opened up her cabin to missionaries needing a place to stay while on furlough. She had a tremendous compassion for those in need and was quick to give (anonymously) of her financial resources. The line is long of those whose lives have been forever changed by coming into contact with Charlsie Cawthon. What an awesome legacy she has left for her children & grandchildren to carry on from generation to generation!!
Charlsie was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. H.C. and Bessie McLaughlin, her husband, Pete Cawthon Jr. (2015) and her granddaughter, Charlsie Swadley (2015).
Those left to honor and cherish Charlsie's memory are her three sons and spouses: Peter and Teresa Cawthon (Oaxaca, Mexico), Mark and Celia Cawthon (Pflugerville, TX), and David and Nancy Cawthon (Hunt, TX). Additionally she is survived by 10 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 2 great, great-grandchildren, who affectionately called their grandmother''Gamma''. Grandchildren: Pete IV, Josh, Rose, Gabe, Cristina, Ana, Tim, Chris, Katie and Kellie. Great-grandchildren: Micah, Mattie, Lanie, Josiah, Asher, Rye, Amelia, Pete V, Noah, Ethan, Sawyer, Catherine, Christian, Casey, Cassidy, Sofia, Sienna, Richard, Jackson, Aidan, Stella, Wesley, Evie, Jubilee, Liberty, Colten and Conner. Great, great-grandchildren: Ava and Austin. And her faithful little dog named Heidi!
The family takes great delight in knowing that death does not have the final word, Jesus does:
''I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.'' (John 11:25)
Charlsie is now in the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who surely welcomed her into heaven with these words: ''Well done, good and faithful servant''!
The family is especially grateful for the compassionate and professional care provided by Peterson Hospice.
