C. Vale Mayes, 96, died December 26, 2002 at a Hospice Care home in Kerrville, Tx. Charles Vale Mayes was born October 4, 1906 in Johnson, Arkansas to Charles Stinson and Lillie Ellen Slauter Mayes. He married Georgia E. Boss, January 22, 1928 in Anderson, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia E. Boss Mayes, Sept. 23, 1993 his parents and two brothers, William Buell Mayes, Muskogee, Oklahoma and Carlos Dayne Mayes, Park Hill, Oklahoma. He resided in Fayetteville, Arkansas and Iowa in his youth, moving to Muskogee, Oklahoma where he was associated with his family produce farming and insurance businesses until the 1930s. In 1937 he joined H. Rouw Co., and moved to Edinburg. Texas where he was a produce salesman. In 1950 he bought the Polis and Hagen Packing Shed and with three partners, W. H. Utz, Ralph Dunavant and W. White, started Vale Mayes Co., shipping and packing citrus fruit later shipping a large variety of vegetables. He was an active member of the Texas Citrus and Vegetable Growers Shippers Association, serving as a or several times Vice President and then as President in 1952 a member of First United Methodist Church in Edinburg, he served on many advisory boards. After retiring in 1973, he and his wife spent the summers at their home in Shell Knob, Mo. on Tablerock Lake and then lived in Edinburg during the winter. After the death of his wife, he moved to Kerrville, Tx where he lived with his daughter and soninlaw, until just prior to his death. He is survived by his daughter, and soninlaw, Patsy and Paul Jackson of Kerrville, Tx. his son and daughterinlaw, Robert and Sherry Williams Mayes of Edinburg four grandchildren and their spouses: Janis and Mike Rogers of Edinburg Paulanna and Steven Watson of Runaway Bay, Tx. Chelsea and Michael Olstad of Scapoose, Or. and Cory Vale Mayes of Edinburg, and three greatgrandchildren Lauren and Paul Rogers of Austin and Tristan Vale Olstad of Scapoose, OR.Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Edinburg.
