Kerrville Carrie Schilling lacked two weeks celebrating her 98th birthday when she died February 21, 2006 at a local care facility. Prior to the short time at the care facility, she had lived at the 220 Harper Road assisted living for eight years, and was one of their first residents. Carrie was born on March 8, 1908 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She attended school there, and as a teenager she played the piano for silent movies in her home town. She married Louis H. Lou Schilling in Cedar Rapids. Lou was a cabinet maker and Carrie did secretarial work. She told of most winter months, Lou would have to dig their car out of the snow which was as high as the very top. In 1937, they decided to move to Texas for warmer weather. Arriving in Kerrville, Lou opened a cabinet shop at 5 points and Carrie was a legal secretary for Joe Burkett for 44 years they retired together. In working with Joe at the foundation and also in civic matters, she became well known and highly respected as the dean of legislative secretaries. She was active in the Kerrville Order of the Eastern Star 24, as well as a member of the Ladies of Altrui Court of San Antonio, and for many years enjoyed traveling with the Tent N Tow club.Carrie and Lou were charter members of Hunt United Methodist Church in Hunt later helping to organize another Methodist Church in Kerrville, today known as St. Pauls United Methodist Church. She was a devoted member, loved singing in the choir, and devoting her time to many other activities. Her optimism and zest for life carried her through so many years. She is survived by niece, Margaret Wells of Cedar Rapids, Iowa several great nieces and nephews Godchildren, Dane and Dawn Meliss McCirmmon of New Braunfels Bucky Blodget of Kerrville Melody Wier Turner of Spring and Don and Darline Moore of New Braunfels close friends, Marvin and Dorothy Bailey of Kerrville, and very special friend who loved her dearly, Marj Nicholson and family of Kerrville, along with a host of many loving members of the Eastern Star, church family, and neighbors..ation will be 4:306:00 PM, Friday, February 24, 2006 at Kerrville Funeral Home, 1221 Junction highway, Kerrville, Texas 78028. Eastern Star Graveside services will be held at 9:30 AM, Saturday, February 25, 2006 at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, 3250 Fredericksburg Road, Kerrville, Texas 78028. A Memorial services will follow at 10:30 AM Saturday, at St. Pauls United Methodist Church, 135 Methodist Encampment, Kerrville, Texas 78028, with the Rev. Sherry Strain officiating.In lieu of floral tributes, memorial contributions may be made to St. Pauls United Methodist Church, 135 Methodist Encampment, Kerrville, TX 78028, or to the Hill Country Youth Ranch, PO Box 67, Ingram, Texas 78025.A word of appreciation from the heart goes to all of the special caretakers that have given the loving care to Carrie for so many years, as she loved and appreciated each and every one of you.Arrangements are under the direction and personal care of Kerrville Funeral Home.
