KERRVILLE Carlota M. Saenz Smith, 89, of Kerrville, Texas has gone to be with her Lord after succumbing to a lengthy illness on Sunday, November 10, 2013 at a local care facility. Carlota was born in Rio Grande City, Texas on October 22, 1924.
Carlota was a long time member and very active at Notre Dame Catholic Church.
She served as a lector at Sunday Mass in English and Spanish and also served as president of the Women of Notre Dame. Carlota was an active member of the AAUW and Women Aglow as well.
She was a retired school teacher, having taught in Texas and California. The highlight of career was teaching Spanish at Harlingen High School in the 1960s. She left that position to teach at Fort Ord, California where she met Charles Smith while living in Monterey, California. After retiring, they moved to Kerrville to be closer to family.
She graduated with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Spanish from what is now Texas AM University Kingsville. She valued education and helped all of her younger siblings graduate from college.
To sum up her life in four words: Her religion sustained her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Luis and Ana Saenz brother, Leonel Saenz sister, Aurelia S. Nagle.
Those left to honor and cherish Carlotas memory are her husband of 45 wonderful years, Charles Edward Smith of Kerrville, Texas brother, Joel Saenz and wife Clo sisters, Eli S. Gomez, Rosa S. Fields, Zulema S. Cheesman and husband Herb, Rebecca SaenzVargas, Nora Wilson and husband James numerous beloved nieces and nephews, along with a host of many loving friends, neighbors, and church family.
Donations may be made to the Saenz Scholarship at Texas AM University in memory of Luis and Anita Saenz or to the charity of ones choice.

A time of ation will be held from 4 6 PM, Wednesday, November 13, 2013 in the Main Chapel of Kerrville Funeral Home with a Vigil Service beginning at 6 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM, Thursday, November 14, 2013 at Notre Dame Catholic Church with Monsignor Mike Boulette as celebrant. Private family Interment will occur at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Hilltop Village Nursing Home and Peterson Hospice for their compassionate care and her dear friend Yolanda Pickard for always being there for her.
