She graduated as a registered nurse from Robert Packer Hospital School of Nursing in Sayre and later earned an EMT rating. She married William P. Bill Nickles November 17, 1956, in South Charleston, WV where both were employed by Union Carbide Chemicals Co.

They lived in South Charleston, WV, and Texas City, Brownsville and Nassau Bay, Texas, before moving to Kerrville in 1987 after Bill retired from Union Carbide. She was an EMT with the Nassau Bay VFD.

After retirement Bethel and Bill enjoyed travel, hunting in TX, and fishing in British Columbia, Canada. Bethels hobbies included playing bridge, sewing and quilting. Bethel volunteered 25 years at Peterson Hospice with her nursing background and at other places using her gifts for sewing and cooking. Bethel was selected a Lifes Treasure, based on her volunteer work, in the first year of that program run by The Kerrville Daily Times.

Bethel was a member of and active at the First United Methodist Church in Kerrville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, Mark William and Douglas James, and her sister Amber Sheibley.

Survivors are her husband Bill, her daughter Rosalie Nickles and husband Dan Harrison of College Station, TX, her son Matthew Nickles of Austin, Tx, two granddaughters Sawyer and Jenna of College Station, TX, her great granddaughter Kyler of College Station, TX and her brother Robert Sturdevant of Cynthiana, KY.

She was able to enjoy a late Christmas dinner on December 28 with all her family except Dan, Sawyer, and Robert.
