Kerrville, Texas A.L. Starkey, Jr. Alonzo Lycurgus Starkey, Jr passed from this earth to Heaven on Wednesday, September 17, 2003. Jr., as family and friends called him, was born May 4, 1920 at home on the Starkey farm located two miles west of Kerrville city limits. His parents were A.L. Starkey and Pattie Ruth Goodwin Starkey. He was the grandson of James Monroe Starkey, one of Kerr Countys founding fathers.A.L., sometimes called Lonnie by classmates, attended Kerrville schools and graduated from Tivy High School in 19. After a year at Schreiner Institute, he enrolled in Draughns Business College in San Antonio. Patriotism called after the attack on Pearl Harbor and Jr. answered by volunteering for the Army Air Corps. He became a glider pilot, then a B17 pilot who was stationed in Foggia, Italy with the 301st Bomb Group, 419th Bomb Squadron, and 15th Air Force. He flew thirtyfour successful missions, became a squadron leader, received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf clusters.Honorably discharged in December 1945, Jr. came home to Kerrville and began a long and successful business career. He was a homebuilder for thirty years and developed the Starkey Manor area. He developed Green Hills Shopping Center that included Kerrvilles first indoor mall. He operated A.L. Starkey, Jr. Real Estate for forty years, as well as, pursuing farming and ranching endeavors throughout his lifetime. His greatest joy was spending time with his two grandsons and hosting family gatherings. His hobbies included hunting, bird watching, and astronomy.He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, a member of the Kerr Area Chamber of Commerce, the 301st Bomb Group Association, the 15th Air Force Association, the American Birding Association, the Texas Ornithological Society, the National Rifle Association, and a past member of the Kerrville Board of Realtors and the Kiwanis Club.A.L. Starkey, Jr. was preceded in death by his parents two sisters, Maryon Starkey Moore and Martha Starkey two brothers, G. Rankin Starkey and Horace Starkey.Survivors include his wife of fiftytwo years, Ethel one son, A.L. Curg Starkey, III and wife Monica two grandsons, A.L. Gus Starkey, IV, and Rankin W. Starkey one brother, J.H. Starkey of Meadow, Utah one sisterinlaw, Mrs. Horace Neva Starkey of Dallas, Texas many nieces, nephews and their families along with a host of many loving friends and neighbors.The family would like to recognize the wonderful care given to Jr. by Juana Morales, Cynthia Aleman, Santos Gallegos, VistaCare Hospice, and the entire staff of The Haven.Memorial services will be held Saturday, September 20, 2003 at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Warren Hornung officiating. Private family interment will be in the Glen Rest Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gus and Rankin Starkey, Jack Moore, Hampton Johnston, Bill Johnston, and Brad Starkey.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the G. Rankin Starkey Memorial Scholarship University of Texas Austin, The Alzheimers Association, VistaCare Hospice, or the charity of ones choice.Arrangements are under the direction of Kerrville Funeral Home.
